Abstract: This paper presents the architecture of a multiagent system based on new OPC Unified Architecture (UA) technology for hierarchical control and monitoring of a complex process control system. This architecture is proposed with utilization of the OPC technology, which contains both a continuous-event component and a discreteevent component by incorporating XML for the negotiation and cooperation with the multiagent system's environments. The practical applications of the proposed architecture are provided and the discussion demonstrates that the proposed architecture is both reliable and effective for applying to multiagent-based complex control system applications.

Keywords: OPC, XML, hierarchical control, monitoring, multiagent, process control, unified architecture
