Curriculum Vitae:

Born in Joao Pessoa, Brazil. Undergraduate studies in Mathematics at the Universities of Brasilia, Federal and Catholic of Rio de Janeiro, and at IMPA, Rio (Pure and Applied Math Institute); also a M.Sc. from the latter institution. Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from the Courant Institute, New York University, 1976. Assistant Professor in Math Departments at the Catholic Univ. of Rio de Janeiro and Univ. of Brasilia (1967-1976). Researcher at the Brazilian National Laboratory for Scientific Computing, since its foundation (1976) to 1993. Visiting Professor at the Universities of Nantes and Montpellier (France), Universities of Brasilia, Sao Paulo, Rio Grande do Sul, Federal Fluminense and at IPRJ- Polytechnic Institute at Nova Friburgo and IME - the Military Engineering Institute (Brazil); Visiting Researcher at INRIA, College de France and LCPC (France), Universities of Chicago and Rice (USA), in different periods from 1979 to 1994. From 1994 to 1996, Chair of LaCC - the Lab for Computational Sciences, being implanted jointly with one of the five Brazilian National Centers for High Performance Scientific Computing and hosted by FunCeMe and Federal University of Ceara, in Fortaleza, Brazil. Founding editor of "Computational and Applied Mathematics", member of the board of other publications. Member of program committee of a number of international and Brazilian conferences on Applied Math and Computational Sciences. Member of several directories and council boards at Brazilian Society for Computational and Applied Mathematics, Brazilian Mathematical Society and Brazilian Association for Scientific Journal Editors. Currently full professor at the Institute of Math and Statistics of UERJ - Rio de Janeiro State University.
