Curriculum Vitae: Patricia Carlson is a Full Professor at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. She did her undergraduate work at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, and received the MA and PhD degrees from Duke University. She has taught at the US Naval Academy, The American University, and Rose-Hulman Institute. Additionally, Carlson taught at the University of Iceland as a Fulbright professor, and served as an adjunct professor at the Graz University of Technology. She has done consulting for a number of private companies. Patricia Carlson has been the recipient of several American Society for Engineering Education/NASA fellowships to study computers and the composing process and electronic publication. She also received grants for research in textbase technology from the US Air Force, and has collaborated on research in the following areas with Los Alamos National Laboratory: qualitative decision-support systems, risk communication, international English, and strategic (or enterprise) communication. From 1989 - 1990, she held the position of National Research Council Senior Associate. From 1990 - 1995, she served as the principal designer and project leader for R-WISE, a software environment for teaching critical literacy. (R-WISE is part of a seven-year Air Force effort to transition advanced technology to the public education sector.) Carlson also worked with NASA's Classroom of the Future at the Center for Educational Technology during the summers of 1996 and 1997.
