• 1951 Born in Graz, Austria.
• 1973 Masters degree (Dipl.-Ing.) Mathematics (Informatics).
• 1976 Ph.D. Graz University of Technology.
• 1971-1979 Work for the Graz Research Center in the fields program design for road construction, operating systems and terminal handling.
• 1974-1984 Assistant professor at Graz University of Technology.
• 1979 Leave at Sperry Univac (Roseville, MN, USA). There the main topic he worked on was lower layer design for local area networks.
• 1984 Approved as Lecturer ("Habilitation") for "Applied Information Processing and Information Technology".
• Since 1984 Full Professor. "Applied Information Processing and Communications".
• Since 1986 Head of the Institute of Applied Information Processing and Communications Technology at the Graz University of Technology.
• Since 1999 Scientific director of the Austrian Secure Information Technology Center (A-SIT), a non-profit organization performing technical control of electronic signatures according to the Austrian electronic signature law.
• Since 2001 “Chief Information Officer” for the Federal Republic of Austria.
