Born in Wellington, New Zealand. Studied Mathematics and Chemistry at the University of Otago (New Zealand), Mechanical Engineering at the University of Cambridge (New Zealand). Technical Officer with Fairey Aviation in Australia 1955-1957. Lecturer and Senior Lecturer at the University of Adelaide (Australia) 1957-1966. PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Adelaide (Australia) in 1965. Professor and Head of Mechanical Engineering at The University of Calgary 1966-1971. Director of Information Services at The University of Calgary responsible for the University Library, Computer Centre and Communications Media 1971-1974. Professor of Mechanical Engineering from 1974 and Adjunct Professor of Computer Science from 1988 through to the present at The University of Calgary. Head of Division of Manufacturing Engineering and Associate Head of Mechanical Engineering at The University of Calgary 1990-1995. Nortel Chair in Intelligent Manufacturing 1996-present.
