Curriculum Vitae: Born in Auckland in 1933. He did his B. Sc. and MSc at the University of Auckland, then he was awarded a Ph. D. at Sydney in 1961, and a D. Sc. (Sydney) in 1971. He lives in Auckland, with his wife Jennifer, where he enjoys classical music and bridge. He is a Honorary Research Professor at The University of Auckland - Applied and Computational Mathematics Unit, in the Dept of Mathematics and Statistics. After his M. Sc. was lecturer at the University of Sydney until 1961. From 1961-64 he lectured at the Univ of Canterbury, NZ. During 1965-66 Prof. Butcher took a position as Computer Scientist at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. On returning to the University of Auckland he became head of the Mathematics Dept (1967-73), then founded the Dept of Computer Science, before taking up his present position. In between times he has worked at other institutions throughout the world, including AT&T Bell Labs, as well as at many Universities. He is editor of the New Zealand Journal of Mathematics and is on the editorial board of a number of other journals.
